Sheer Curtains: When They're the Right Choice on Their Own

Sheer Curtains: When They're the Right Choice on Their Own

Sheers solve a specific problem

A sheer curtain's job is narrow but genuinely useful: soften direct daylight and give daytime privacy from the street or a neighbouring building, without blocking the view or making a room feel shut in. On the right window, that's the whole brief — nothing heavier is actually needed.

When a sheer is enough on its own

North-facing rooms that never get harsh direct sun, upper-floor windows with no direct sightline from the street, and rooms where the priority is keeping as much natural light as possible are all good candidates for a sheer-only treatment. It's also a common choice for a home office or reading nook where glare control matters more than full privacy.

When it needs a partner

South- or west-facing rooms, bedrooms, and anything at street level generally need a heavier curtain or blind layered behind or alongside the sheer for night-time privacy and light control. A double-track setup — sheer on the inner track, blackout or heavier curtain on the outer — is the most common way to get both.

Fabric and care notes

Sheers are usually made from lightweight voile, linen-blend or polyester-based fabrics chosen for airiness and drape rather than density. They're generally easy to launder, though the finer the weave, the more carefully they should be handled to avoid snagging.

A quick way to decide
